DIBA recently hosted, together with Veronica Manson, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Amsterdam (IIC), an inspiring evening for its members at IIC’s wonderful Keizersgracht location. Veronica Manson opened the evening with an interesting presentation the Institute’s services and activities plus of some important events planned by IIC for the coming year.
Marijke Genade, Professor in Archeology at the University of Amsterdam, then illustrated the archaeological site of Satricum, south of Rome near Latina, where Dutch archeologists have been excavating 48 years and, during the last 30 years, under her leadership. With excellent slides, Prof. Gnade showed discovered evidence of multiple historical phases, ranging from pre-Roman and Volscian settlements to the Roman period, including a sanctuary of Mater Matuta and an Imperial Roman villa.
As Casale del Giglio, a winery with vineyards located above and around the excavation site, is one of its important supporters, Casale del Giglio wine was subsequently offered to the DIBA members. This wine paired very well with the wonderful dishes served by the Amsterdam-based catering service Casa Di Maggio.
